CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Ivy

My phone rings, and I jump out of bed. The sun is bright outside, and I instinctively know it’s late in the morning. Crap. I overslept. I search my purse for my phone and barely get to it before it rings off to voicemail.

“Hello?” I say, trying to not sound like I just crawled out of bed.

“Babygirl, you’re late,” Aiden’s voice growls down the line.

“I know, I know. I’m so sorry. I forgot to set my alarm last night.”

He chuckles, and the sound goes right to my nipples. I could listen to him laugh all day, every day. “It’s okay, Ivy. Take your time, and I’ll see you when you get here.”

“You’re sounding awful cheerful for calling an insubordinate employee,” I tease.

“Well, you’re a special case, little lamb. Besides, I’m the reason you were up so late. Makes me in a forgiving kind of mood.”

“I’ll have to remember that.”

He laughs again. “Don’t be too long.”

“I won’t.”

I quickly hang up and rush through taking a shower. My hair is a freaking mess so I tame it into a bun. I put on my makeup and grab the first outfit that jumps out at me. I dress quickly, slide my feet into my heels, and then I’m out the door.

I don’t notice the envelope under my windshield wiper until after I’ve started my car. I let out a frustrated breath and grab the envelope. I climb back in my car and rip open the envelope, curious about what it could be. I pull out a folded piece of paper, and a picture falls out onto my lap. I pick the picture up, and my lungs seize in my chest. It’s a picture from last night of Aiden and me kissing outside my house.

Aiden is cupping my ass, and my arms are thrown around his neck. We look completely lost in each other. I would be thrilled to have a picture of that moment, but the big red bullseye circling Aiden’s head scares the crap out of me. I open the note and read the one line scratched onto the paper.

My aim is true.
